APCM 2017 - whats it all about?

APCM Special!

Well of all the special editions you could hope for… here it is. The Annual, Parochial Church Meeting special!

The Annual Parochial Church Meeting happens once a year, and enables us to elect new officers of the church and to review the work of the church. Over the last few years we have divided these two functions in half, meeting in April to elect officers of the church and then later in the summer we review the work of the church and loom together for the year ahead.

But first…. A passage of scripture…

The Choosing of the Seven

In those days when the number of disciples was increasing, the Hellenistic Jews among them complained against the Hebraic Jews because their widows were being overlooked in the daily distribution of food. So the Twelve gathered all the disciples together and said, “It would not be right for us to neglect the ministry of the word of God in order to wait on tables. Brothers and sisters, choose seven men from among you who are known to be full of the Spirit and wisdom. We will turn this responsibility over to them and will give our attention to prayer and the ministry of the word.”

This proposal pleased the whole group. They chose Stephen, a man full of faith and of the Holy Spirit; also, Philip, Procorus, Nicanor, Timon, Parmenas, and Nicolas from Antioch, a convert to Judaism. They presented these men to the apostles, who prayed and laid their hands on them.

So the word of God spread. The number of disciples in Jerusalem increased rapidly, and a large number of priests became obedient to the faith.

Acts 6:1-7

So…when is it?

This year our APCM is being held straight after the church service on the 30th April. So, after the service we will have tea and coffee in church and then crack on. It shouldn’t last more than 30 mins.

Who can come?

Anybody can come who is interested in the life of the church.

What will happen?

Electing Wardens

First of all, we will have what is called the ‘Vestry Meeting’, where we will elect Church Wardens. Nominations for Church warden are presented and the meeting votes for the church wardens with a show of hands. If you would like to know more about what a church warden does, we’ve included some information you can read by clicking the icon to the right.  If you’d like to be nominated as Church Warden please speak with Phil.

Review APCM minutes from last year

The meeting will review the APCM minutes from last year, which we will post on our website here if you would like to have a look in advance, and we deal with any matters arising from the minutes.

PCC elections

We have four vacancies on our PCC this year and are looking for members of the church to come and join our PCC {Church Council}, to play a part in helping shape and direct the life of our church. If you would be interested in joining our PCC then have a look at the paper the PCC have put together to help you think about it further by clicking on the icon on the left.

Deanery Synod elections

This year we are also electing people to join the deanery synod. The Deanery synod representatives are elected every three years and serve with others form churches all over the local deanery to discuss matters of wider church concern. Again, we have included some information (by clicking the icon on the right) to help you decide if you would like to be appointed as a deanery representative.

Electoral roll

You can only vote at the APCM for PCC members if you are on the churches electoral roll. So, every year we revise the electoral roll so that those who want to be can be added to it.

At the APCM the treasurer presents the accounts to the congregation and shares with the church the overall picture of the churches finances, and provides an opportunity for people to ask any questions they would like. The meeting also appoints an independent auditor for the accounts.

The APCM begins to draw to a close with an opportunity for anyone in the meeting to ask any questions and raise any issues they would like the PCC to consider in the year ahead. The meeting then closes with a brief report from the Vicar and churchwardens, and we set a date for a fuller review of the year and a look at the road ahead in the summer.

We want to encourage as many of our congregation as possible to be involved in this short meeting, as it is here that the congregation appoints from amongst its own number those who are given the responsibility of working with the clergy to shape the ministry, mission and worshipping life of the church.  With love in Christ, Phil and Maureen.
