Summer Cricket 2016
17th July 2016
In perfect, sunlit conditions, on Sunday, 17 July, the Wilford Church All Stars took on Holy Spirit Church in the fifth annual showdown match, held at the Becket School.
Although some of the usual players were not available for call-up, into their shoes stepped eleven committed and fearless volunteers. These included Paul Wicks, who faced down the best Holy Spirit could pitch at him despite suffering from cracked ribs. A true warrior, it took a run-out to send him back to the pavilion. Jill Edmonds was captured on video dismissing a ferocious pace attack with a classic drive to the boundary. As usual, Bernie Sporton captained the team and took on the opposition with his customary flair. Oliver Sporton's big hitting was only ended on the very last ball of the allotted overs. Everyone played a huge part, with bat, ball or in the field. Notable mentions also for Alan Wood, Chris Smith, Peter Brown, Mike Grycuk, Joe Buckland, Neil Devonport, Leo Periam and John Rogers. Thanks also to Julie Vaughan Williams and her team for organising the tea and the drinks. Ray Hutchins and Leighton Vaughan Williams combined their years of umpiring experience to ensure that justice and fair play prevailed. For the record, the Wilford Church All Stars came up a little short on the day against the regulars at Holy Spirit, but only in terms of runs. In every other way, the All Stars lived up to their name. The All Stars will return. Leighton Vaughan Williams
