Building Together

Building together - Who we are revealed

John the Baptist reveals Christ to Andrew, and Andrew shares this epiphany with Simon Peter. Paul writes to the Corinthian church and reminds them that the activity of God amongst them confirms the good news they declared to them. Somehow, we ourselves, or more rightly the activity of God within us becomes a means for God revealing himself to others.

Building together - Unity in Christ

As we celebrated the week of prayer for Christian Unity, we looked at Paul's call to the Corinthian church to be unified & not follow different people. It's alright to like particular ways of doing things, but we all worship Christ – NOT our favourite preacher or worship style! We are all different, so we aim not for UNISON (all the same) but for HARMONY (all different but fitting together in the whole) in Christ Jesus.

Building Together - Imperfect, but add a bit of better butter

Looking at Corinthians 2, Ian helped us to see God working in us and through us, and how the things that conventional Wisdom tells us are our weaknesses, often end up being the things God uses most. Moreover we considered about how best to use the Holy Spirit working in us to flavour the situations in which we find ourselves. When we mix the right amounts of salt, light and yeast with a generous helping of Jesus and a dash of ourselves, the result can be rather surprising!!

Building Together - Milk or Meat, I or God, Together, Together, together

Drawing on 1 Corinthians 3:1-9, Lindsey offers a challenging message that we are called to share together in building God's church and growing together. Together, together, Together, focused on God. We talk in the language of 'I' when it truth it should be we.

Building Together - YOU are the temple

In 1 Corinthians chapter 3 Paul writes challenging words about leaders in the church, but ultimately is concerned to call the church to a higher vision of herself. The leaders of the church are but its servants, you, pal writes are the temple of the Holy Spirit, all things are yours. How ridiculous then would it be to be swept up in the lauding of one leader over another, likewise how impoverished it would be to complain about languishing under a poor leader. You are the church. You are not mere minions, or sheep, but the bride of Christ, co inheritors. We are Kings and priests, not mere extras on the set nor pawns to be moved around. Come away from the spiritual milk that infants require, and understand yourselves as God sees you. And act on it.

Building Together - Walk the walk

In our last sermon on 1 Corinthians we looked at how we sometimes judge leaders or others, but actually it is only God's judgement that matters – and he knows us right down to our thoughts and motives! We asked whether we are puffed up with our own knowledge and wisdom, or can we be honest and vulnerable about who we are? And finally we were challenged with a question: Do we “walk the talk” or just talk? \'For the kingdom of God is not a matter of talk but of power\'
